NEH Challenge Grant

In June of 2005, The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) announced that Emory University's Bill and Carol Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry (FCHI) was one of 10 cultural institutions in the U.S. awarded NEH Challenge Grants. The FCHI's Challenge Grant will provide $500,000 from NEH, matched over 5 years by institutional funds to provide $2.5 million for the FCHI's endowment.

The FCHI opened in 2002 as a residential research center for humanities scholarship with a mandate to coordinate interdisciplinary humanities programming. Since then, the Center, located at 1715 North Decatur Road, has become a focal point for humanities endeavors within Emory College and across the University, a status recognized by the award of the NEH Grant.

"NEH Challenge Grants contribute to the long-term viability and strength of America's leading cultural institutions and their humanities programs," said NEH Chairman Bruce Cole. The NEH has a long record of supporting the humanities at Emory, and the new FCHI grant is another milestone in this history.

NEH Challenge Grants are awarded to assist institutions in carrying out long-term plans that strengthen the humanities. FCHI's Challenge Grant will support:

• a new FCHI Junior/Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Poetics;
• the FCHI's successful Interdisciplinary Research Seminar Series;
• a new series of Great Works Seminars for the general public;
• a ½ time FCHI Fellows Coordinator;
• a new Public Programming Fund, for Emory scholars to introduce the cutting-edge humanities research currently underway at Emory to the wider community.
